Portraits of Children

weekend workshop

We will discuss the ins and outs of drawing and painting children, from how to take excellent photo references to how to translate them into art. Learn how to capture a likeness without sacrificing freshness, as well as how to convey expression and realistic form.
We will have live child models for a photo shoot and sketch/ color study. You may bring in your own photographs from home to work from or use your digital images from the photoshoot.
You may choose to draw or paint in the medium of your choice. Demos will be in charcoal and oils.
Additional model fee applies.

Painting and Drawing the Portrait

weekly class

Learn how to draw realistic and expressive portraits!  We will begin by drawing, focusing on the large planes and shapes of the face. We then progress to color, with an emphasis on mixing fresh skin tones. Beginners will be introduced to the fundamentals of drawing and painting portraits, and more advanced artists will deepen and refine their understanding of core concepts. Instructor will demonstrate in charcoal and oils. Students may choose to draw or paint in their preferred medium.

Classical Drawing

weekly class

Students will learn how to draw realistically from life. We will develop our abilities to observe and interpret the visual world as we build foundational skills in line, shape, proportion, values (shading), and texture. Exercises will focus on still life drawings. Great for beginners and intermediate students who want to practice and refine core skills. Instructor will demonstrate in charcoal. Advanced or repeating students may work on independent projects.

Mastering Color in the Portrait

Learn to see and mix rich and luminous skin colors under different lighting scenarios. Explore the interplay of warm and cool colors, and discover how to keep your colors fresh and harmonious while painting a portrait from life.  Demos in oils, but other media welcome. All levels. Alla Prima Portrait 

weekend workshop

“Alla Prima” or Italian for “At the First” is a direct and expressive painting style where a painting is completed all in one session.  In this class we will learn how to paint alla prima portraits from live models in oil. We will begin by blocking in the large planes and shapes of the face, then progress to color with an emphasis on mixing fresh skin tones. Beginners will be introduced to the fundamentals of painting alla prima portraits, and more advanced artists will deepen and refine their understanding of core concepts. Instructor will demonstrate each morning followed by guided painting time.
