Facial Features: A Structural and Artistic Approach

Take a deep dive into the features of the face! In this two-day workshop we will explore the structure and anatomy of the eye, mouth, nose, and ear and discover how they fit into the face as a whole. We will draw and paint from live models in order to put our knowledge into practice. Demonstrations will be in charcoal and oils, and students are welcome to use the media of their choice.

The Expressive Portrait
weekend workshop
In this three-day workshop, we will create portraits with a special emphasis on capturing expressive gesture, mixing luminous colors, and portraying believable clothing. Core fundamentals and the underlying structures of the portrait will be discussed in depth. Demonstrations will be in charcoal and oils, and students are welcome to use the media of their choice. All levels welcome!

Painting and Drawing the Portrait
weekly class
In this class we will learn how to draw and paint the portrait from plaster casts and live models. We will begin by drawing, focusing on the large planes and shapes of the face. We then progress to color, with an emphasis on mixing fresh skin tones. Beginners will be introduced to the fundamentals of drawing and painting portraits, and more advanced artists will deepen and refine their understanding of core concepts. Instructor will demonstrate in charcoal and oils. Students may choose to draw or paint in their preferred medium.

Classical Drawing
weekly class
Students will learn how to draw realistically from life. We will develop our abilities to observe and interpret the visual world as we build foundational skills in line, shape, proportion, values (shading), and texture. Exercises will focus on still life drawings. Great for beginners and intermediate students who want to practice and refine core skills. Instructor will demonstrate in charcoal. Advanced or repeating students may work on independent projects.
